China and U.S. Crack Transnational IPR Infringement Crime
China and the United States have cracked a transnational intellectual property rights (IPR) infringement case, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced on November 8th. The MPS busted seven dens manufacturing, marketing and distributing counterfeit products and seized more than 3,000 fake brand-name leather products, bags and suitcases, glasses, watches and accessories. A total of 36 suspects were arrested in the crackdown, who had sold fake products for more than 15.1 million USD. China and the United States have maintained communication and cooperation on cross-border IPR infringement crime in recent years, and will maintain zero tolerance on transnational crime, according to the MPS.
Seminar on IP Judicial Protection and Market Value Ends Successfully
On November 9th, Seminar on IP Judicial Protection and Market Value organized by Guangdong Higher People's Court and co-organized by Guangzhou IP Court was held in Guangzhou. Many professional IPers discussed numerous hot topics such as relationship between IP market value and compensation of infringement and damage as well as compensation of IP infringement and damage in different fields etc. Tao Kaiyuan, vice president of the Supreme People's Court, Gong jiali, secretary?of?the?Leading?Party?Members'?Group and president of Guangdong Higher People's Court attended this conference and delivered speeches.
SIPO and UKIPO Carried out the 2018 Bilateral Workplan
Commissioner Shen Changyu hosted his British counterpart, Tim Moss, Chief Executive/Comptroller General of the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) at the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) in Beijing on November 10, updating the 2018 Bilateral Workplan between the two established partners. Prior to the signing, Moss reviewed the results of cooperation in 2017 with SIPO Deputy Commissioner He Zhimin, sharing comments between them on the proposed cooperative tasks in 2018 and IP matters of mutual concern. The 2018 Bilateral Workplan features high-level talks, legal and policy information sharing, patent examination and patent examiner exchange and China-UK IP symposium.
China and Brazil Launch Pilot PPH
After a fruitful sharing of comments on more profound bilateral cooperation, SIPO Commissioner Shen Changyu reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and an agreement on a joint patent prosecution highway (PPH) with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Pimentel, president of the Brazilian National Institution of Intellectual Property (INPI) in Beijing on November 13. Pimentel recognized China's developments in the IP field. "China is the biggest trade partner and export destination country for Brazil, IP cooperation between China and Brazil will have an important impact on the economic and social development of two countries." SIPO and INPI will launch PPH pilot program on February 1, 2018, facilitating the applicants from the two countries to have their patent applications examined in an expedited manner in the other office.
Beijing Zhongguancun District Aims to Become China's Leading AI Player
Zhongguancun Science Park's administrative committee recently released an industrial incubation plan to promote the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. Known as China's Silicon Valley and a national-level high-tech demonstration zone, Zhongguancun has been making efforts in promoting its AI industry in recent years. By 2020, Zhongguancun is expected to form an AI super group that will encourage international competitiveness. For instance, a batch of frontier technology achievements and AI international standard are expected to take shape in three years. Official statistics show that there are currently 250 artificial intelligence enterprises with over 7,800 patents in Zhongguancun District, both ranking the first place in China. Additionally, 42.9 percent of China's AI entrepreneurial enterprises are also from this place.
