Beijing makes great progress in science and technology

It is learnt from the press conference on S&T independent innovation of Beijing held by the Information Office of Beijing Municipal People’s Government that last year, Beijing invested over 60 billion yuan in research and development, accounting for 5.8% of the GDP of the whole city, much higher than the average level of 1.52% in the nation.

“Investing more in science and technology targets to build Beijing into the S&T innovative center with influence in the world.” said Yang Weiguang, the spokesperson of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Committee. Till 2012, the S&D investment of Beijing will exceed 6% and the appropriation expenditure of enterprises on R&D should account for half of all the expenditure of the whole society on S&D, and the proportion of the added value of hi-tech industries, information service industry and S&T service industry should take up 25% of local production value. Meanwhile, Beijing will impel the construction of study-oriented city and raise the scientific and cultural quality of the citizens of Beijing with the aim of cultivating over 230 scientists and engineers for per 10,000 people.  

According to Yang Weiguang, in the next four years, Beijing will take out at least 50 billion yuan from the financial funds to support independent innovation and industrialization, particularly supporting such industries as new energy, biomedicine, modern service, information industry.
