2009 Cross-Strait Trademark Seminar held in Taipei

2009/06/17

On June 15, the 2009 Cross-Strait Trademark Seminar was launched in Taipei, attended by Fu Shuangjian, Advisor to China Trademark Association and Vice Director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Accompanied by frequent cross-strait economic and trade exchanges, IPR-related issues attract great attention of the both sides, in particular, the issue of well-known trademark identification derived from trademark.

In May 2006, China Trademark Association and Chinese Commercial & Industrial Coordination Society entered into an agreement and determined to hold seminars annually by turns, negotiating on the protection of the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises on their trademarks.

This year's Cross-Strait Trademark Seminar is the fourth session of this kind, focusing on topics like "Trademark Registration Protection and Counterfeiting Acts Investigation", "Trademark Recognition and the Identification and Adoption of Evidences Used" and "Identification and Protection of Well-known Trademarks (or Famous Trademarks)".

Last year, when participating in "Cross-Strait Trademark Forum" held in Chengdu, Fu Shuangjian once put forward that "we should use trademark strategy to promote cross-strait economic and trade exchanges."

And in this seminar, he said that, as an important intellectual property, the use of trademark is becoming a problem in front of two sides of the Taiwan Straits that can not be avoided when doing business. So we continuously conduct exchanges through the platform of seminars, and make active research in the area of trademarks.

At present, China owns 700,000 registered trademark applications each year, but the annual applications from Taiwanese are from 7,000 to 10,000. Fu indicated that State Administration for Industry and Commerce, State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office and other organs have attached great importance to and actively handled complaints from Taiwan enterprises and issues resulting from them.

Also at the seminar, authorities responsible for trademark affairs of both sides introduced their own norms in trademark registration, use and other fields. A number of famous Taiwan enterprises arrived and took part in the discussion.
