SAIC's trademark head talks about China's trademark strategy development

State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) lately promulgated and issued Opinions on Implementing National Intellectual Property Strategy Outline and Vigorously Boosting the Development of Trademark Strategy.
When interviewed by reporter from People's Daily, Director of the Trademark Office under SAIC Li Jianchang said that the development of China's trademark cause is facing with an unprecedented good opportunity.
"Since the year 2002, the amount of domestic trademark applications has increased with the speed of 100,000 pieces per year, which ranks the first place all over the world. And in 2008, the aggregate number of China's patent applications has reached to 698,000."
Li pointed out, the SAIC adopted a series of significant measures in 2008, and made a great deal of works focusing on quickening trademark review work, including strengthening the construction of leadership and working group, setting up review office, perfecting stimulus mechanism, and hiring 300 persons as assistants to trademark review work.
As to trademark protection, the Trademark Office has cracked down on counterfeiting trademarks, imitating famous brands and trademark infringement, done a good job in the protection of well-known trademarks, foreign-related trademarks, trademarks of agricultural products, geographical indications, etc., established a long-term monitoring mechanism, improved trademark administrative protection system, and created a good atmosphere for the protection of intellectual property rights.
And as to helping Chinese enterprises "go out" via trademark strategy, the Trademark Office has strengthened friendship and cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization, the International Trademark Association and other international organizations, carried out a series of multilateral and bilateral trademarks international exchanges, and participated in meetings organized by WIPO, WTO and APEC.
At present, the protection of well-known trademarks and geographical indications becomes the main task of the Trademark Office, as well as an important mission of newly-released trademark strategy, Li Jianchang introduced.
