Zippo injunction prevents Lorillard from selling blu eCigs in Germany

2014/08/21

Zippo Manufacturing Co. said recently the company has been granted a preliminary injunction in Germany against a subsidiary of Greensboro-based Lorillard to prevent it from selling its growing e-cigarette line called blu eCigs in that country.

Lorillard (NYSE: LO) does not presently have a retail presence in Germany, but has been expanding its blu e-cigarette brand internationally by rebranding SKYCIG products into blu products in the United Kingdom. Lorillard bought the assets and operations of SKYCIG, a British-based electronic cigarette business, for $48.6 million in 2013 as part of a goal to become a global e-cigarette player.

The injunction against Cygnet UK Trading Ltd. is designed to prevent Lorillard from using the “blu” brand name for e-cigarettes sold in Germany and Zippo said it is part of an effort to protect its blu trademarks worldwide that are used in connection with Zippo's butane lighters and fuel.
