Kunshan, a city in Jiangsu province, has made a breakthrough in patent creation in 2013. Every ten thousand residents in the city held an average of 18 invention patents in force, increasing from 13.08 in 2012, indicating its improved innovative capacity.
The accomplishment made in 2013 was attributed to the adjustment of awarding policies on patent applications and grants and the streamlined documents and procedures in filing applications. A total of 34,053 patent applications were newly filed last year, in which 10,510 were on inventions; as many as 15,439 applications were approved and 743 of those were on inventions. As of now, the city has filed a total of 136,522 patent applications (28,220 on inventions) and obtained 77,606 grants (3,062 on inventions).
Last year, the city developed 13 projects on patent commercialization and selected 20 potential enterprises to help them industrialize their patents. Some 6 enterprises were identified as provincial intellectual property exemplary entities and 35 enterprises were organized to establish standardization in managing their proprietary rights.
