In the first month of 2014, patent applications in Shanghai reached 8,743, up 8.8%, of which applications on inventions, utility models and designs were 4,315, 3,567 and 861 respectively, accounting for 49%, 41% and 10% separately.
Patent grants in the same period hit 3,927, down 14.9%, of which grants on inventions, utility models and designs recorded 808, 2,434 and 685.
Filings under PCT in the city accumulated to 77, increasing by 30.5% when compared with those in 2013.
As of January, Shanghai has held a total of 48,812 invention patents in force, growing by 19.2% on a year-on-year basis with an average of 20.5 owned by every ten thousand residents.
