Mayor outlines Shanghai's goal at intellectual property forum

Shanghai aims to become an Asia-Pacific center in intellectual property trading and services by 2020, Mayor Yang Xiong told the 10th Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum, which opened yesterday.

Yang pledged more efforts to reform the IP industry, increase copyright protection and stimulate innovation and creativity. Under the guidance of the State Intellectual Property Office, Shanghai is working on its own copyright protection laws and regulations, he added.

The mayor expressed wish to strengthen cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization and other countries for a win-win situation.

The forum discussed topics such as copyright protection and policies, environment for innovation, and training of IPR professionals.

Wang Binying, deputy director-general of WIPO, and Tian Lipu, director of the State Intellectual Property Office, also spoke at the forum.

Tian said Chinese officials should combine copyright protection with the creation of a national system that encourages innovation.

British Intellectual Property Office Chief Executive and Comptroller-General John Alty and Shanghai Vice Mayor Zhao Wen also attended the forum.
