The Director General of the National Library, affiliate to the Ministry of Culture, Mamoun Talhouni said that the number of copyright infringement cases referred to courts since the year 2000 till 2008 reached up to 2347, according to Ad-Dustour daily newspaper.
Talhouni noted that the violations included illegal copying of CDS, DVDs, books and software programs.
The Director General stated that the Library referred a total of 354 cases last year related to selling counterfeited DVDs in stores and kiosks located in different parts of the Kingdom.
Talhouni pointed out that in case of multiple infringements; the minister of culture has the right to close down the violating facility.
He added that such acts negatively affect the national economy calling upon all related organizations and institutions to protect the Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in order to create an appropriate climate that attracts foreign investments mainly in the field of information technology.
Talhouni concluded by pledging that the National Library will continue its mission in combating copyright violations through all legal means.
