As of the end of 2011, Shenzhen has held 178,426 issued patents, in which valid invention patents have accumulated to 40,495, ranking the second among all large and medium-sized cities in China. In addition, invention patents among every ten thousand residents reached 39, ranking the first nationwide in terms of patent density.
In 2011, the city's patent applications under PCT recorded 7,933, ranking the first across the country for eight years in a row and accounting for 45.4 percent of China’s total PCT filings.
By the end of 2011, valid registered trademarks in the city have amounted to 171,091 including 330 Guangdong Famous Trademarks and 93 Chinese Well-known Trademarks, ranking the third among all large and medium-sized cities in China.
With respect to copyright, Shenzhen has received 9,529 applications on computer software in 2011, ranking the third among all large and medium-sized cities in China. The output value of the city's copyright industry rose to 22 million yuan, taking up 19 percent of the municipal GDP, playing a leading role among domestic cities.
As a strong city in intellectual property, Shenzhen has been recognized as a national demonstration city for trademark strategy implementation by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, and also has been identified as a national IPR exemplary city by the State Intellectual Property Office. It is now applying to be a national copyright pilot city to the National Copyright Bureau.
In Shenzhen, large-scale enterprises held more than 62 percent of the total patent applications and grants, while small and medium-sized enterprises which took up 99.2 percent of the total enterprises in the city only filed less than 38 percent of submissions, revealing the imbalance of IP strength distribution.
Under Several Measures on Promoting Intellectual Property Collateralized Financing in Shenzhen, small and medium-sized enterprises could secure bank loans by using their indigenous intellectual properties as collateral, introduced by an official from the municipal intellectual property office.
