Some 60 items of excellent technological fruits were commended at the municipal science and technology work meeting hosted by the municipal Party Committee and the municipal government of Jiangmen city, Guangdong province last week.

The meeting also summarized the accomplishments on science and technology development achieved in 2011 and made deployment for the next phase of work in 2012.

Mayor Pang Guomei said that last year, the city has made great progress in science and technology development, which could be demonstrated as follows: research and development expenditure accounts for 1.33% of the total GDP, up 0.36%; eight projects gain awards at provincial level and as many as 47 projects are recognized by municipal authorities; the output value of products falling into high technology category reaches 11.84 billion yuan, increasing by 34.6% and taking up 24% of the above-scale industrial gross output value; over 700 science and technology projects are carried out and subsidized with 50 million yuan worth of governmental funding; patent applications hit 7,494, up 31.69%, among which 821 are for inventions, up 54.6%.

Pang also addressed that in a bid to yield more successes this year, local authorities should exert efforts to promote the development of advanced manufacturing and strategic emerging industries as well as to propel the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries. Meanwhile, patent applications in the city are expected to exceed 9,000. In addition, the city should make full use of the land, financial and industrial capitals to ease the bottleneck of inadequate funding for industrial park development.
