The geographical indication industry in Hunan aims to build regional brands and agricultural industry clusters by registering GI trademarks and implementing the branding strategy of agricultural products.
As of the end of 2011, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce has approved 1,381 GI trademarks, which play a significant role in promoting agricultural economic development.
Statistics show that the added value of agricultural products bearing GI trademarks grew by 105% in average after 2010 when GI protection was enforced. The revenue per capita of rural residents increased by 90% or even ten times more than that of the period when there was no protection at all.
An official from Hunan Administration for Industry and Commerce introduced that as of the end of 2011, the province has owned 52 GI trademarks, ranking 8th across the country. Those trademarks cover a wide range of industries including ceramics and tea. Moreover, four of them were recognized as Chinese Well-known Trademarks and ten of them were identified as Hunan Famous Trademarks.
