Dongguan set up a trademark pre-warning protection system

2012/04/23

After nearly one year of preparation, Dongguan trademark pre-warning protection system in Guangdong province is officially put into use, which will install a "security net" for trademark. Dongguan Municipal Industry and Commerce Administration revealed that the system will firstly launch pre-warning protection on well-known and famous trademarks.

"Our system was put into operation in early April," said the spokesman of the Trademark and Advertisement Division of the Administration. It took nearly one year to conduct a city-wide research on the database of trademark information.

What is a trademark pre-warning protection system? The official explained that the system implements monitoring and warning services through a comprehensive database of trademark information, providing Dongguan enterprises with the fastest way to master trademark dynamics of domestic and international markets and ensuring the effective implementation of legal protection.

In a bid to reduce and avoid violations of hard-won corporate trademarks, particularly well-known and famous trademarks, Dongguan established the system.

The latest data shows that Dongguan has a total of 60,574 registered trademarks, including 207 provincial famous trademarks and 23 Chinese well-known trademarks. Of the newly identified 30 famous and well-known trademarks, 3 ones belong to sino-foreign joint ventures, enterprises with sino-foreign cooperation and wholly foreign-owned enterprises and the other 27 are owned by private enterprises, accounting for 90% of the total. However, most enterprises in Dongguan run ODM projects instead of indigenous brands. In 2011, every 100 market players had 11 registered trademarks, with registered trademarks accounting for less than 7% of the total in Guangdong. Therefore, the system will initially monitor famous and well-known trademarks. If the trademark of a Dongguan enterprise was registered in other cities, the industrial and commercial department would remind companies the monitored results.

Based on the mature operation achieved in the initial stage, the system will be put into full use, said the official.
