In 2011, a total of 4,509 invention patent grants made Hangzhou rank the second among all municipalities (municipalities directly under the Central Government excluded) in China, according to information released by the State Intellectual Property Office.

The city has been ranking the first among all capital cities and the second among all vice-provincial cities for five successive years in terms of the amount of invention patent grants. Meanwhile, H3C Company in the city ranked the fifth with 481 grants among all domestic enterprises across the country.

In attempt to promote knowledge-based economic development, Hangzhou has made considerable efforts to unlock its creativity. Over the past few years, local government has attached great importance to IP development and protection, and has achieved great accomplishments in IP creation, utilization and protection. In addition, it was highly commended for its contributions to IP promotion by the SIPO last year. [Chinese version is available on sipo.gov.cn]
