Beijing ranks first in terms of invention patents per 10 thousand people

2012/02/10

In 2011, patent applications in Beijing nearly reached 80,000, up 36.1% over 2010. Invention patents per 10 thousand people amounted to 26.78, ranking first in China, according to the latest statistics from Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office.

As a comprehensive appraisal indicator, invention patents per 10 thousand people should be at least 3.3. However, Beijing not only finished the task in advance but overfulfilled the task formulated by the “12th Five-Year Plan.”

Once a patent is issued, it costs patent holders a large sum of money to maintain it. Some patents lacking market value gradually vanish. However, patents in Beijing rank top both in quantity and quality.

Last year, patent applications in Beijing exceeded 77,955, up 36.1%, 60% of which are invention patent applications covering such fields as mechanics, electrics, communication, biology, medicine, chemistry and electro-optical technology. IP increasingly contributes to Beijing’s economic development.

Two enterprises, Beiqi Foton and BOE Group, respectively filed over 1,000 patent applications in 2011. Beiqi Foton filed 1,115 patent applications, nearly two times that of 2010. Foton Motor sees an annual sales volume of 650,000 and generates 54.3 billion yuan. In global commercial vehicle sector, the annual sales of Foton ranks second in the world.

In a bid to enforce patent creation and protection, Beijing IPO released the Opinions on Strengthening Intellectual Property in Economic and Information Fields to improve the influence of IP on major strategic emerging industries.

In future, Beijing’s IP strategy will play a larger role in economy. In 2012, Beijing will market excellent patents via IP commercialization companies.
