Patent filings and grants in Chongqing achieved 32,039 and 15,525, up 40.4% and 28.5% respectively, both hitting record high, revealed by statistics from Chongqing Intellectual Property (IP) Office on February 1.
1.65 invention patents for every 10,000 people
It was known that patent applications filed last year in Chongqing for invention, utility model and design were 8,839,16,786 and 6,414, of which 1,865,8,749 and 4,911 were granted respectively. The filings and grants for invention patents both soared significantly, up 71.6% and 63.2% separately.
"Patent for invention is a key indicator of innovative capability", said an official from Chongqing IP Office, adding that the rise in this sector reflected the rapid development of Chongqing in innovation.
By the end of last year, every 10,000 people in Chongqing had had 1.65 invention patents, up 51%, ranking ninth across the country and second in western China.
Output value of patented products reaching 121.8 billion yuan
It is also worth noticing that factories and mineral enterprises filed 12,689 patent applications in 2011, up 56.8%, said the official.
"The surge is due to the improvement of Chongqing's ability in IPR creation, utilization, protection and administration", he explained.
According to statistics, with a year-on-year increase of 59%, Chongqing generated a 121.8 billion yuan output value from patented products in 2011, accounting for 13.4% of the city's gross industrial output value, up from 13.4% of 2010.
Meanwhile, Chongqing has also had an IP service system well developed with its unique characteristics, said the official. "The city will further launch a national experimental area on intellectual property cloud computing this year," he added.
