NEW YORK, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- More than 200 protesters took to the streets in New York City on Wednesday to protest the anti- piracy bills being debated in U.S. Congress.

The rally was organized by the influential tech networking community NY Tech Meetup outside the offices of NY Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, who are supporters of both Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).

Waving signs of " Save the Internet, Stop PIPA", protesters told local media that although SOPA and PIPA are meant to curtail online piracy, it could also lead to widespread censorship across the web if passed.

Meanwhile, major websites like Wikipedia, Google are also demonstrating their opposition to the bills Wednesday by purposefully blacking out portions of their websites.
