On December 23, Premier Wen Jiabao convened and presided over the executive meeting of the State Council and discussed and disposed to accelerate the development of the next-generation Internet industry. It is required at the meeting to improve coordination between departments and establish a system mechanism promoting industry development so as to strengthen IPR protection and optimize market environment.
It is important to build a next-generation Internet with abundant addresses, advanced and energy-saving technologies, high security and a mature business model, as pointed out at the meeting.
It outlines the roadmap and major goals of China's next-generation Internet. China aims to put the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)-based network into small-scale commercial pilot use and form a mature business model by the end of 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the country will deploy and commercialize the IPv6-based network on a large scale and achieve the interconnection between IPv4 and IPv6-based operations. During that period, a group of international competitive research institutions and enterprises in the next-generation Internet sector will be established. The Internet industry's effect on boosting consumption, investment, exports and employment will be fully strengthened. Its role in driving the development of information industry, high-tech service industry and economic society will also be bought into play, according to the meeting.
It identifies the following key tasks: a) to strengthen resource sharing, establish the next-generation national information infrastructure and promote website system upgrading. b) to focus on the research and development of chips, equipment, software and systems of the next generation Internet. c) to speed up the industrialization of the next-generation Internet, promote new business development, existing network test and online applications, establish a business platform featuring Internet Protocol Version 6 based tri-networks integration and support the development of Internet of things, cloud computing and mobile Internet. d) to enhance network and information security, strengthen the regulation and administration of network address and domain name system and fully improve the security and credibility of the next-generation Internet. e) to improve technology and industry standards and strengthen the research of critical theory and core technology.
