Hubei: Patent applications in Xiangyang new and high-tech development zone increasing by 35%

Since Xiangyang new and high-tech development zone was built up 19 years ago, its industrial output value has been increasing year-on-year. The development zone has achieved a total output value of 107.5 billion yuan in the first ten months in 2011, exceeding the total amount of 2010. One of its main successful factor is indigenous innovations.

In June 2006, the zone was recognized as a national intellectual property pilot park by the State Intellectual Property Office(SIPO).

Since 2008, a 200 thousand yuan worth of special fund has been established to stimulate entities in the zone to increase patent quantity and improve patent quality. The special fund has been increasing by no less than 20% year-on-year.

Stimulating by a series of policies, patent applications in the zone have been increasing by 35% year-on-year, from 206 applications in 2006 to 518 applications in 2009. In the first nine months this year, enterprises in the zone applied for patent subsidies for more than 300 patent applications.

Currently, the leading products in industries such as automobiles and parts, new materials, optical electromechanical integration, electronic information and aerospace all have their own patents.

At the end of 2009, the pilot zone passed the examination conducted by the SIPO with 944 scores.
