Jiangsu: Nanjing Ranked Second among Equivalent Cities for Patent Applications

According to the statistics released by the State Intellectual Property Office, Nanjing ranked second among equivalent cities for both patent applications and growth rate in the first three quarters in 2011, advancing one place compared to 2010. 

There are 16,904 patent applications, up 65.8%. Invention patent applications are 7,349, up 57%; utility applications are 5,017, up 50.1%; and design applications are 4,537, up 108.9%. In addition, there are a total of 9,226 patent grants, up 40.1%, of which 2,571 are invention patent grants, increasing by 44.3% and ranking first in Jiangsu province. 
 
A spokesman of Nanjing Municipal Intellectual Property Office said patents maintained a rapid increase and invention patents even increased by 20% annually. "It represents the strong capacity of Nanjing in invention-creations and technological innovations," said the spokesman.  

Enterprises with indigenous intellectual property are becoming the main force in innovation. 40% of invention patent applications are from enterprises and 30% of them are from universities. Applications from research institutes and individuals are also increasing. "We found applications from small sized private enterprises are also increasing. It is anticipated that 70% of revenues of enterprises are from patented products," added the spokesman. [Chinese version is available on Nanjing Daily]
