Statistics from the State Intellectual Property Office show that from January to August 2011, Shanghai received 530 international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), ranking the third among provinces across the country and following Guangdong and Beijing with 5,489 and 1,127 applications respectively.
Figures indicate that the applications of Shanghai in 2010 ever reached 735, up 49.1% over 2009 with 493.
The rapid growth of the applications reflects that the innovative capacity in Shanghai has been increased and innovators and creators in the city have begun to use PCT to protect their rights in international competition.
