Hebei: Fake wine hangover: Life in prison

2011/08/10

Former wine company deputy manager Wang Chunping was sentenced to life imprisonment and forfeited all personal property after he was convicted of making and selling fake wine in Qinhuangdao, capital of the northern province.

Five of his associates were sentenced to prison terms ranging from seven to 15 years.

Beginning in 1998, Wang - also the company's chief engineer - organized workers to add ingredients including water, sugar, alcohol and yeast to pulp and grape skin left over from the actual winemaking process.

More than half of the fake wine was sold to two winemakers in Changli county in the province, which then generated more than 28 million yuan by bottling and selling the concoction between March 2008 and December 2010.
