Haidian District Court has been approved by China's Supreme Court as a pilot grassroots judiciary to hear patent cases, the first of its kind in the city.
It is authorized to deal with district disputes over utility patents and industrial designs involving up to 5 million yuan or as much as 10 million yuan if all parties in a case are based in Beijing.
Patent disputes are usually only heard at intermediate or higher courts.
Because Haidian is home to the high-tech and R&D hub Zhongguancun, the local court applied for authority to hear such cases early this year due to growing numbers of patent applications and disputes.
