Shandong: Retirees tinker and invent a low-cost solar water heater

Three retired men in Jinan, capital of the eastern province, recently applied for an invention patent for a low-cost solar water heater, the result of three years of effort.

One of the inventors, Cao Huiyuan, in his 60s, said they started to make the device "just for fun, but didn't expect it would take three years".

The solar heater can "boil 60 liters of water in only half an hour on sunny days - although it is not good looking", said Cao.

The cost of the device is only around 200 yuan ($31). Similar products currently on the market cost at least 1,000 yuan.
