Shanghai: Forum: Overproduction by the nation's low-end LED industry

2011/07/13

China might face overproduction in its light-emitting diode (LED) industry, experts said at an international industry forum held recently in the metropolis.

There are more than 3,000 LED companies and 13 LED industry zones in the country, according to a report released on the forum.

Most of the nation's LED companies are engaged in low-end production and lack core technologies, so they must import both advanced equipment and processes from abroad, eroding price advantages.

The forum heard that local preferential policies for LED companies have hindered trans-regional mergers and acquisitions that are necessary to further develop the industry.
