Three Shenzhen defendants convicted of trade secret theft for stealing Apple's iPad2 tablet designs have been sentenced to terms ranging from one and a half years in prison to two years of probation.
According to court testimony, Xiao Chengsong, corporate representative of Maxtor Electronics Co Ltd, received designs for the tablet's shell from Lin Kecheng, then vice-head of Foxconn's R&D department, through Hou Pengna, a former employee of Foxconn.
Xiao then contracted a Dongwan factory to produce more than 100 protective covers for iPads and sold them online.
Maxtor Electronics makes iPad and iPhone accessories. Taiwan-based Foxconn is the contract manufacturer of Apple's widely popular iPad and iPhone products.
Evidence heard by the Bao'an district court showed that the R&D cost of the stolen trade secret was 2.06 million yuan ($318,196).
