"In my opinion, when we promote to protect intellectual property and fight against piracy and infringement, it is also necessary to impose some restrictions on IPR right holders. When pricing genuine products, we should take into consideration the affordability of developing countries." said Wu Handong in a lecture held in Zhongnan University of Economics & Law on June 9.

As the third lecture under the Summit Forum on Chinese Civil Law, it welcomed about 300 listeners from the university and three lecturers, namely, professor Wu Donghan, associate professor Gao Fei and associate professor Ji Jun.

When asked "whether it will increase the economic burden of common people to use genuine products and protect IP ", Wu Donghan pointed out that China still needs high-level protection on IPR as it is essential for enterprises to head for international markets, to initiate indigenous innovation and industrial structure adjustment. He further emphasized that the pricing of genuine products should take into consideration the affordability of developing countries. For a long time, Microsoft system software had been sold at a much higher price in China than in America and even in European countries. The logic that "we should raise the price of genuine products to protect our copyrights as piracy in China is so rampant" is totally wrong.

"I think piracy and counterfeiting can not become the mainstream of our culture; and manufacturing counterfeits and selling counterfeits should never be regarded as part of Chinese people's social life," said Wu, "combating piracy is not just a legal issue. It also involves many other social aspects such as society, economy and management."
