Intangible Cultural Heritage Law to be effective on June 1

2011/06/02

The Law of the People's Republic of China on Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereinafter referred to as the Law) will come into force on June 1, 2011. Efforts to protect Chinese intangible cultural heritage (ICH) will have a law to go by.

In recent years, the protection and inheritance of ICH have drawn extensive concern in the international community. In addition to that China joined the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2004, the Law to be implemented soon means that the ICH protection in China has entered a stage of implementation. The Law clearly defines the scopes it covers, the ICH catalogues to be established and the move that it will bring ICH protection into the national economic and social development plan as well as the financial budget.
