A deputy to the National People's Congress proposed that academic fraud should be classified as a crime at the annual meeting that ended on Monday.
Yan Xijun, vice-president of the Association of Tianjin Industry and Commerce, said authorities should provide more severe punishment for those who receive research funding or prize money as a result of academic cheating.
Self-discipline in the nation's academia is weak, he noted, so laws and regulations as well as a public supervision system and investigation department are urgently needed.
