Hui Architecture Added to Cultural Heritage List

2010/10/27

The style of architecture known as Hui architecture was recently added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESSCO, according to the China Huizhou Culture Museum.

Hui architecture was listed under the "Chinese traditional timberwork architecture technique", together with that of Beijing quadrangles (siheyuan), ancient houses of Xiangshan School and residential buildings in southern Fujian province.

Dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Hui architecture features multiple-layer apartments with pink walls, dark tiles, elevated roof ridges, upturned eaves and delicate carvings, blending with winding verandas and Chinese-style pavilions and towers in an enclosed courtyard.
