Beijing: cracked down on infringements of IP rights and counterfeiting and confiscation of 56 million yuan in 2020

On April 22, a press conference of the Information Office of the Beijing Municipal People's Government introduced the status of intellectual property protection in Beijing in 2020. According to Pan Xinsheng, deputy director and spokesperson of the Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office, in 2020, the Beijing Municipal Market Supervision System closed 1,723 cases against infringement of intellectual property rights and counterfeiting, with a fine of 56 million yuan.
 
Pan Xinsheng said that in 2020, Beijing continued to lead in China in its comprehensive strength in intellectual property rights, and its optimized business environment was awarded as a national “benchmark city”. The number of patent authorizations in the city was 163,000, of which 63,000 were for invention; 565,000 were trademark applications and 363,000 were trademark registrations; 1.005 million copyright registrations and 204,000 software copyright registrations; the number of applications for new plant varieties was 564, and the number of authorizations is 88. As of the end of 2020, the city has 155.8 invention patents per 10,000 people, ranked the first in China; the number of valid trademark registrations is 2.223 million; there are 13 geographical indication products including Pinggu Datao and Daxing Watermelon, and the total number of companies that have approved the use of geographical indication protection product special signs was 52.
 
In addition, the enforcement of intellectual property rights has continued to increase. In 2020, the Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office handled 360 patent infringement dispute cases, including 316 e-commerce patent infringement cases, five exhibition patent infringement cases, and 39 patent administrative adjudication cases. Beijing's market supervision system cracked down on infringement of intellectual property rights and counterfeiting, and a total of 1,723 cases were closed, with a fine of 56 million yuan. The Beijing Municipal Cultural Market Comprehensive Law Enforcement Corps inspected 18,000 websites (times), closed 13 infringing and pirated websites, deleted 8,000 infringing and pirated links, and destroyed more than 200,000 infringing and pirated books. The Publication Appraisal Center of Beijing Copyright Administration issued a total of 1380 appraisal opinions. During the year, Beijing Customs seized a total of 2728 batches of suspected infringing goods, 576,000 pieces.
 
The effectiveness of judicial protection has been further brought into play. The city's courts at all levels accepted a total of 66,710 civil and administrative cases of intellectual property rights, and concluded 66,973 cases. Beijing received a total of 1,315 intellectual property reports and complaints, including 856 trademark rights, 234 copyrights, 221 patent rights, and four trade secrets related.
