Science Town Boosts Economic Circle

Chengdu Science Town, an innovative entrepreneurship landmark in Tianfu New Area, will play a key role in driving the innovative development in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, the largest metropolitan area in western China.
A large number of research institutes and cutting-edge scientific and technological enterprises have gathered in the town, which is 29 kilometers south of Chengdu, with a planned area of 99 square kilometers.
In August, the Chengdu supercomputing center will complete its first phase of construction. The center will fill the gap in the layout of China's supercomputing system in the western region.
Wen Qi, director of the innovation capability department of the Management Committee of Chengdu Science Town, said that new industries such as artificial intelligence, big data and animation design are rapidly developing in Chengdu. The rate of development has created a huge demand for supercomputing.
"As an important information technology infrastructure, the supercomputing center will provide important service support for related industries."
The scientific research undertaken by 64 national universities such as the University of Electronic Science and Technology, the Chengdu Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other 30 national research institutions, is closely related to supercomputing.
The supercomputing center can attract more leading researchers achieve more scientific and technological achievements.
The Chengdu Science Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chengdu College of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences are also under construction in Chengdu Science Town.
The former is expected to be put into use this year. By then, Chengdu Science Town will be home to CAS' Chengdu branch, as well as its affiliates-the Chengdu Institute of Biology, the Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, the Chengdu Literature and Information Center, and two affiliated companies: Chengdu Organic Chemicals and Chengdu Information Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences Co Ltd.
The Chengdu College of the Chinese Academy of Sciences plans to use 260 mu, or 17.33 hectares, of land and set aside 167 mu of land for major scientific installations and leading scientific research platforms undertaken by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is expected to be completed and put into use in 2022 and strives to reach 1,500 students by 2025.
