NetEase Cloud Music recently signed a string of deals to secure more authorization in an aggressive attempt to turn its copyright operations around, Chinese media reported.
On May 12, the Chinese online music platform forged strategic cooperation with Warner Chappell Music. WCM is the global music publishing company of Warner Music Group, one of the world's top three recording companies.
The agreement enables Net-Ease Cloud Music to use 1.3 million copyright songs that belong to WCM. These include albums by stars such as Katy Perry and Steve Aoki as well as Chinese singers Chen Chusheng and David Zee Tao.
The move came after two collaborations with Rock Records and widely acclaimed Japanese animators Studio Ghibli in March.
Studio Ghibli has authorized NetEase Cloud Music to offer its animations' music, including blockbuster movies My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.
Hot on the heels of the partnership with Studio Ghibli, the strategic cooperation with Rock Records further expands NetEase Cloud Music's song library.
Copyright is essential to online music platforms' survival amid fierce competition, industry watchers said.
A shortage of copyrights used to be a bottleneck in NetEase Cloud Music's growth, which drove some users to other platforms, they added.
