Hubei Shifts Produce via Online Promotion

2020/04/10

Hubei turns to livestreaming to sell surplus crops and livestock created by virus lockdown.
GI products of Hubei, the central province hit hardest by the outbreak in China, boast a sizable fan base across the country. Xiaogan rice wine; Wuchang bream; Wufeng green tea; Honghu lotus sprouts; Zigui navel oranges; Qianjiang crayfish and Shennong honey are among the most popular items.
By the end of June 2019, Hubei had 165 GI products and 429 GI trademarks, ranking second and third nationwide respectively, according to China Intellectual Property News.
As Hubei emerges from its months-long coronavirus lockdown, locals and people around the country are coming together to find solutions for its agricultural sector.
"Pig pens, chicken coops, fish ponds and farmland were all overstocked," said an official with the Hubei Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs at a news conference held on Friday.
The official described the glut of farm produce in the province during the early days of the outbreak.
In late March, State media outlets including China Central Television made an appeal to the public to purchase agricultural products from Hubei. People have created hashtags on social media platform Sina Weibo to help the produce sell quickly.
As of 10 am April 7, the hashtag "Thank you for buying Hubei products" on Sina Weibo had garnered 130 million views and 41,000 posts.
